Re-modelling columns from Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

The seminar was led by the led by mark burry, senior architect of the sagrada familia, barcelona. Inspired by gaudi´s columns in sagrada familia , the workshop explored firstly the possibilities in the description and representation of the columns and the creation of a potentially underlying geometrical guiding and secondly how to branch columns and join them elegantly to the trunk.
Each of us , as a group had the opportunity to design the column through computational methods and later build our columns with ¨gaudi´s column machine¨ using pvc half pipes and a lot of plaster. The amalgamation of digital and physical modelling led to a better understanding of the meaning behind the pragmatic shapes and strength of the column.
The outcome of the workshop gave a glimpse into the design thinking of the famous gaudi designs and the physically constructed models of the research stood as art pieces by themselves.
