Zoetrope Experiment
USING ELECTRONICS TO COMMUNICATE STORIES -
The concept that kick started this project was the question of how stories can be told by means other than the convectional ones. As i researched more in this subject, i came across one of the very first objects to show animation , which was the zoetrope. The next step was the amalgamation of an 18th century object with current technology in order to share stories . These stories would be perceived through the rotation of the object and strobe light which works on the principle of persistence of vision. For this experiment, the story of evolution of communication technology was adapted. Each ring of the zoetrope portrayed stories of each communication technology in order of its invention starting from the telegraph . As the user interacted with the object by talking singing or by any mode of communication, the strobe light followed the speed of the voice and the intervals between each strobe varied accordingly. This alteration in speed affected the rate at which the movement of static images was perceived. Faster the strobe rate, there is an increase in speed of motion and vice- versa.
The end result was a physical object as apposed to a 2d screen or a page which communicated narratives while interacting with the user. The current work on this project is to convey an actual narrative from a story or a situtaion which could be perceived physically and interacted with.
